4 Mystical Lakes of Kabayan

FUN AT 4 Mystical Lakes of Kabayan

Trail Difficulty: 3/10

Adventure Duration: 2 day/s

Nestled at the foot of the mighty Mt. Pulag is the small and quiet town of Kabayan. This town, known as being mysterious and even eerie, is home to multiple burial caves and the famous Kabayan Mummies but aside from this it secretly hides 4 lakes that are equally mysterious and filled with local folklore and mythology.
These lakes, surrounded by pine and mossy forests and mountains are scenic and peaceful making it ideal for a relaxing camping experience with good friends. At night the sky opens up to a multitude of stars shining brightly, setting the mood for a session of catching a shooting star or just simply sitting by the camp light to exchange stories or to hear your local guides share tales of their forefathers who once ruled the area. All this while you enjoy a warm cup of coffee or a good meal together with amazing comapany. A perfect and meaningfull adventure.
In addition to the lakes we will also be visiting Mt. Timbak, one of the highest peaks in the cordilleras and home to some burial caves.
The hiking required in this adventure is relatively light and pleasant making it ideal for begginer hikers who want to experience camping outdoors.

Meet-up and Getting There

1. Whre is Kabayan?
Kabayan is a small town at the foot of Mt. Pulag. It is located North of Manila in the province of Bunget, roughly 280km from Manila.

2. How do we get there? How long does it take to get there?
We first take a public provincial but to Baguio that takes 6 hours before riding a local jeepney through the winding roads of Benguet for another 4-6 hours.

3. What transportation will be used?
We will first take a public bus before riding a local jeepney.

4. Can I bring my own transportation?
Yes you can but we do not advice this especially if you are not familiar and used to driving through the zig-zag provintial roads of Benguet.

5. Where is the meet-up point?
Meet-up is at the Victory Liner Bus Terminal in PASAY. This terminal is located at the South Bound lane of E.D.S.A. in Pasay.

6. Can we be picked up somewhere aside from the designated pick-up point?
Unfortuantely provincial buses are not allowed to pick-up and drop of anyone aside from their terminals during most parts of the day therfore there is no other meet-up point but the bus terminal.

7. Can I meet the group in Baguio or at the jump-off point?
Yes you can just as long as you arrive on time.

8. How do I know who my Adventure Guides are?
Aside from your Adventure Guides reaching you via your mobile phones your Adventure Guides will be in Trail Adventours shirts with a big "Adventure Guide" printed at the back of their shirts. It may also help to ask people dressed as hikers gathered in certain area of the meet-up point.

The Hike and Destination

1. Is the 4 Lakes of Kabayan Hike ideal for beginners?
Yes, it is ideal as it is level 2 hike and has a very manegable and gentle trek invovled. You are still expected to have a certain degree of fitness. We also advice you to be mentaly ready in case the weather is not ideal.

2. How difficult is the hike?
As compared to other mountain this hike is easy. The hiking/walking invovled is mild and manegable. Bear in mind though that when it rains the trails become slippery and harder to hike in. Another challenge possible is the camping where many things may be unfamilar and uncofortable to you.

3.I heard that there are locations in the Philippines with insurgencies, is Kabayan safe?
Yes, the town is home to very peaceful, simple and friendly Indigenous People. It is also a destination for hikers.

4. Are there restrooms/toilets on the mountain
There are toilets/restooms only at the jump-off point but none in the camp and on the mountain itself. If you have to do you "business" during the hike or at the camp site you have to find your spot and dispose of your waste properly.

5. Is there mobile signal on the mountain or at the camp site?
Mobile signal is very weak in the area.

6. Are ther porters I can hire to bring my bag?
Yes there are porters that charge to bring your bag for a fee.

Yes, it gets very cold on the mountain. Prepare for an average of 15deg C or sometimes below 10deg C temparatures.

1. How fit should I be to hike the 4 Lakes of Kabayan?
Though the hike is considered "easy" you should still have a decent fitness level to hike this mountain. Aside from the physical challenge ready yourself for the challenges camping outdoors brings such as the coldness, possible rains and possible discomefort of sleeping to name a few.

2. What excercises can I do to prepare for this hike?
Doing long walks, climbing stairs with a bag and running are very good excercises to help you for this hike.

3. What should I wear during this hike?
Preferably where light and flexible clothing such as dry-fit shirts and hiking pants. Have a good pair of shoes either hiking shoes or cross trainers. Do not wear jeans and slippers and avoid wearing cotton shirts and sandals during the hike. Aside from this bring clothes both to prtect you from the sun and for the cold.

4. How do I prepare for camping?
There are many aspects of camping you can prepare for but ehe first step in preparing is to make yourself aware of the possible discomforts camping brings such as the absence of a soft bed to sleep in, lack of proper restrooms, limited movements at night, sleeping in very cold conditions and many others. Doing your research and asking people for tips help a lot as well as bringin adequate and the correct gear for camping.

If you are unsure if you want to buy the proper gear for camping it is best to borrow from a friend who has. There are also some gear which you can rent from Trail Adventours.

In principle hikes continue rain or shine but in cases where weather is really bad hikes are called off. When a storm signal is raised in the area hikes are automatically cancelled. Hikes are also cancelled if there are issues of security or if the mountain is closed due rehabilitation.

2.How are we informed if the hike is cancelled?
A text message and email will be sent to you either by the Trail Adventours Management of your Adventure Guide. This is usually done the Wednesday before your hike.

3. What options do we have if hikes are cencelled?
For cancelled hikes you are given the following options:

a. Transfer to another hike on the same weekend
b. Reschedule your hike either for the same mountain or for a different one
c. Complete refund

Other Hike Matters

1. What if I can no longer continue with the hike?
Your Adventure Guides will manage your situation by allowing you to rest before assisting you to slowly get to the destination.

2. Am I allowed to take a break? How often and how long should my breaks be?
Yes, your breaks will depend on your pace and capability. It is most advisable to walk slow and have fewer breaks rather than to walk fast and have many breaks. Rest stops usually take 5-10 minutes. Your Adventure Guides will also manage the hike so that there is a good hiking pace and ample rest stops.

3. What if I am slow?
Do not worry, an assigned sweeper is there to ensure that no one is left behind. He or she is required to arrive last all the time.

4. How many hikers are there in our group?
Typically here are around 12 hikers on multi day hikes and we impose a maximum size of 18 hikers for multi-day hikes. Aside from your fellow participants you will have 1 Adventure Guide for every 6 participants. The management can also decide to put more Adventure Guides than usual to ensure safety and quality of the hike.
